User Research

I began outlining the user's motivation/journey to better understand their experience and needs throughout each phase of their production flow. With the User Journey, I highlight all the different phases, actions, devices, and contexts involved.

User Journey

First, I defined the main activity of the user journey based on the concept: finding suitable film set locations. I then divided the user journey into three phases: before, during, and after. This approach helps me clarify how the product can later be structured to effectively meet the user's needs.

User Scenario

Now that the overall needs, steps, and context have been established, I began creating a structured outline of the user scenario based on the journey and its phases. In this outline, I aim to describe the persona, their goals, and the various contexts in comprehensive detail, unlike the user journey. The goal here is to deeply explore the user's underlying motivations and how the product can effectively address their problems. This user scenario demonstrates how the concept fulfills and responds to the user's needs and challenges extensively.

Phase 1 - Before

Sam is an independent Indie filmmaker sitting at home on the couch. In two weeks he is heading for Iceland. He wants to shoot some scenes there for his new film production. He has developed a storyline for it. He just doesn't know yet which locations would be a good fit and where to find them based on his preferences and plot. He opens the “Locus” app on his desktop to help him find a suitable film set location(s). Sam looks forward to collecting and storing his locations.

Phase 2 - During

When Sam has arrived in Iceland, he wants to plan for his shoot day. He looks at his saved filming locations on his phone in the hotel room and creates an itinerary for tomorrow and the day after. In doing so, he specifies what part of the day he wants to shoot at a set location and how long he needs to do so. The app generates the most efficient route that takes into account the dates of the individual locations and the time estimated for them. Sam is satisfied and feels prepared for his shoot day - Today is Sam's first shoot day and he uses the app on his phone to start his route. The app opens Apple/Google maps to guide Sam to his set locations as he is used to from previous use with these apps. It is sunny and Sam is on his way to his first location of the day when suddenly the weather turns. It becomes cloudy and it starts to rain. Locus sends Sam a notification with the weather change and lets Sam know to suggest redirecting the route to another set location that carries the data "cloudy and rainy”. When the weather clears, Locus redirects Sam to its locations that carry the data "sunny”. This allows Sam to get the most out of his shoot.

Phase 3 - After

Sam is back home from his trip and sitting by his desktop. He opens the Locus app and adds notes and photos to capture the details/experience of the location for other filmmakers. A few weeks later, he uploads still frames from his published film and tags them to the location.

Product Requirements

In the next phase of the design process, I summarized the user's goals and needs in a set of User Requirements to better define the product's objectives. I translated the goals and needs into concrete features within a Product Requirement document, organizing them using the MoSCoW model and the DETAILS method.

Competitor Analysis

Similar solutions for this concept provide searchable databases of locations with filters for style, size, and budget. While some platforms lead in user experience with clean, Airbnb-inspired designs and intuitive booking flows, they fall short in offering advanced search tools, making them less effective. I noticed many smaller platforms struggle with outdated designs, underdeveloped mobile optimization, and limited location details. Overall, there is a significant gap in personalized recommendations, efficient communication between scouts and (potential) owners, and a richer narrative around locations, creating clear opportunities for differentiation.

Wireframes & Flow

The overall UX strategy for the user flow is linear yet flexible. Users move from exploration → planning → execution, with the freedom to choose their focus and pace. To ensure consistency, I applied uniform icons, buttons and layout grids, creating a cohesive experience. The wireframes feature high contrast and large tap targets, enhancing mobile usability. The wireframes are designed with a modular structure in mind which supports scalability, allowing easy expansion with new genres or features. The landing page presents clear value propositions and a strong call-to-action that effectively guides users into exploration. The card based lay-out combined with smart filters (genre, emotion, terrain) and an interactive map with list overlays makes location browsing fast, intuitive, and story-driven.

Visual Research

The analysed movie-based sites below, prioritize visual storytelling, using high-quality images and dark UIs to create a movie feel. They follow a consistent layout with grids, carousels and maps with lots of metadata to make browsing easier. Prominent search and filter functions improve findability, while hero sections and trailers highlight important content. Overall, they combine strong visuals with structured navigation for both entertainment and research purposes. For the visual aspect of the app, I looked into how to use powerful visuals, structured layouts and rich metadata to visually captivate users while supporting fast discovery and deep browsing.

Interface Design

In the final version of the platform, I combined cinematic aesthetics with practical planning tools. A dark UI, bold yellow accents, and large visuals to create an immersive, film-like experience. Consistent use of color, icons, and typography ensures a polished design. Image-driven filters spark user imagination and interactive maps with pins and route lines visually support location discovery to help users plan their shooting days. The interface is fully optimized for both desktop and mobile use.

Reflection & Learnings

This project taught me how to balance functional design with visual storytelling, especially in a context where inspiration and logistics go hand in hand. I learned the importance of maintaining a cohesive visual language while still ensuring usability across devices. Designing for both discovery and planning pushed me to think and focus on how users interact with content navigating maps, creating routes, and filtering narrative themes. It deepened my understanding of responsive layouts and how to translate a cinematic ambience into a practical digital tool.

With an extra week, I would have liked to expand the platform with features tailored to larger professional film crews, such as advanced route planning tools on desktop, detailed set logistics like power access, parking availability, and crew capacity. I also saw potential in developing social features to give the platform a more dynamic and community-driven feel, making it feel more current, collaborative, and alive.
